UOG welcomes new dean of the School of Business and Public Administration

Fred R. Schumann, who holds a doctorate in Asia Pacific studies and has held various academic and management roles in the 暗网AV鈥檚 School of Business and Public Administration for decades, is the new dean of SBPA.
Schumann was most recently a professor of global resources management. He taught courses in international tourism, policy, planning and development, and other tourism-related courses in the university鈥檚 business program. He also served as the lead faculty of UOG鈥檚 international tourism and hospitality management program and as a graduate faculty member in the professional MBA program.
UOG President Thomas W. Krise described Schumann as an asset to the local university.
鈥淔red R. Schumann is well-positioned to lead the School of Business and Public Administration and strengthen its position as the bedrock of higher education for Guam's professional workforce in the public and private sectors. His new role comes as the economic landscape on the island and in the Western Pacific region changes and trends shift in the tourism industry. His background in academics and in business will be valuable as the university adapts and prepares for the changes,鈥� Krise said.
Schumann described some of his goals: 鈥淭he first is to raise awareness of the university鈥檚 land-grant mission and the role of the School of Business and Public Administration to support this among faculty, students, and the community. Following this will be to help position to contribute to the university鈥檚 overall mission and Para Hulo' Strategic Plan most effectively. Supporting faculty development, student recruiting and retention, and establishing/maintaining strong connections with private and public organizations will be important factors to achieve these goals.鈥�
Schumann holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree from the Western State College in Colorado, a master鈥檚 degree from the University of Oregon, and a doctorate from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan. He has participated in various tourism-related economic revitalization projects with UOG鈥檚 Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives and has initiated small business/entrepreneurial research projects and sustainable business/workforce development projects with the UOG's Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the Center for Island Sustainability.
Schumann鈥檚 new role took effect Sept. 12 and follows the recent retirement of Annette Taijeron Santos, who served as dean of SBPA between June 2013 and July 2022.
