Residents interested in developing better spending habits and building near- and long-term financial security are invited to a free five-session workshop with University of Guam Land Grant. The Building Foundations for Financial Security Workshop will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from May 5 to June 2 on the University of Guam campus.

Many people want to improve their financial situation but are unsure where to begin or get quickly overwhelmed or discouraged by advice that sounds unrealistic, said L. Robert Barber, an extension specialist and economist with UOG Land Grant who will be leading the workshop. This workshop will help individuals grow wealth consistently over time starting with whatever they have.

Rather than focusing on quick fixes or unrealistic life changes, the series will emphasize understanding ones current spending, adopting healthier financial habits, and setting up simple systems to grow wealth over time. Participants will learn how small, intentional changes can add up over time.

Topics to be covered in the series include:

  • analyzing personal spending patterns
  • identifying unnecessary expenses
  • building an emergency fund
  • creating a workable plan for monthly spending
  • automating savings
  • beginning longterm financial planning

The series also provides a basic introduction to retirement accounts and simple investment concepts, such as index funds, to help participants feel more confident about the future.

This workshop is meant for anyone who wants to move away from earning and spending without direction and begin intentionally building financial security through better habits and informed choices.

The workshop is free, and no prior financial knowledge is required. Participants are encouraged to attend all five sessions, as each week will build on the last. Register at .
