The UOG Tritons won their first playoff game in over three years, defeating FairZesh 91–78 in the opening round of the Triton Men’s Basketball League playoffs on Monday, April 27, at the UOG Calvo Field House. KFC Guam Select also defeated the MicroFriends 102–89, setting up a semifinal showdown with Northern Construction.
In the opening game of the night, UOG and FairZesh battled closely in the first quarter. FairZesh came out on top in the first 10 minutes, 23–22. In the second quarter, however, the Tritons exploded for 28 points and dominated FairZesh, which managed only 19 points. UOG took a 50–42 lead at halftime.
FairZesh responded in the third period, behind 13 points from Chris Connor. They outscored UOG 26–20, cutting the Tritons’ lead to just two points, 70–68, heading into the fourth quarter.
UOG regained control in the final period, outscoring FairZesh 21–10. The Tritons also held Chris Connor scoreless in the quarter to secure the 91–78 victory.
Michael Quinata led the Tritons with 17 points, while Jordan Madrazo added 13 and Ralph Macaldo contributed 12. Chris Connor scored 18 points for FairZesh, while Manne Pillias added 16 and BJ Artui had 14.
The Tritons improved to 2–4 for the season, while FairZesh fell to 2–4.
In the nightcap, KFC Guam Select jumped on the MicroFriends early. They outscored the “Friends” 33–14 in the first quarter, with AJ Grape scoring 10 points in the opening 10 minutes to build a strong lead. The MicroFriends competed more evenly in the second quarter, narrowly losing it 25–24. KFC led 58–38 at halftime.
The MicroFriends attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring KFC 34–21. They cut the Guam Select lead to 10 points with about three minutes remaining. However, they could not get any closer and ultimately lost 102–89.
Guam Select was led by AJ Grape with 26 points, while Sammy Setik added 22. The MicroFriends were led by Jose Ignacio with 28 points, and Ken Brozo contributed 22.
KFC Guam Select improved to 4–2 on the season, while the MicroFriends ended their spring Triton League season at 0–6.
The Triton Men's Basketball League semi-finals will be played on Wednesday:
